"The election is over after having to experience a split in the family of the Tammany Democrats,...and Gideon Lee our ex-mayor was the regular candidate and was elected over the Whig James Monroe,...The general supposition here is that our difficulties with France, is farther from being amicably settled now than ever....Capt. Back and Ross will start about the first of April on expedition to the South Pole. Letter written from New York, N.Y.
